Cat Knit (Jacob Grant)

Hello, everyone! Our book today is Cat Knit by Jacob Grant, a very sweet fable about the importance of friendship and loyalty.

Cat has always been quite fond of Girl, his owner. But one day, Girl brings home a colorful new guest: Yarn. Yarn and Cat hit it off right away, and end up becoming the best of friends and doing everything together. That is, until Girl takes Yarn and knits him… into a cat sweater! Suddenly, Yarn is a very different kind of friend, and Cat wonders: can you still be best friends when one of you has changed so much?

This was a great book! The metaphor that this story uses to explain the concept of loyalty is fantastic: when Cat tries to ditch Yarn (now his sweater), he is literally left out in the cold. It shows young readers that people changing over time is inevitable, but though friends may change, true friendship is figuring out the new way to fit into each other’s life and continuing to be there for each other. Add in some unbelievably adorable illustrations and a great length, good pacing and fun humor for young and older readers, and this one is a definite crowd-pleaser. Loved it! Baby Bookworm approved!
