Hello, friends! Our book today is Three Magic Balloons, written by Paul Margulies and Julianna Margulies, and illustrated by Grant Shaffer. This sweet bedtime story is a retelling of a tale told by Paul Margulies to his daughter, Julianna, and her sisters when they were children.
Once a week, no matter the season, Ariel, Miranda and Jane’s father takes them to the zoo and gives them a bit of money for treats. And always, the girls generously purchase food for the animals instead. A balloon vendor sees this, and rewards the girls’ kindness by giving them three magic balloons with instructions to tie them to their beds that night. The girls do as they are bade and, come evening, find themselves whisked off on an adventure through the starry night sky and beyond.
This was such a lovely, imaginative story. The fantastical journey that the girls go on is what childhood dreams are made of, and I loved that an emphasis was placed on the girls being kind, brave, and good. The illustrations are a perfect fit, from the gorgeous primary colors used for the girls to the ethereal settings and characters (pleasantly reminiscent of Bemelman’s Madeline illustrations). It might be a bit long for the youngest baby bookworms, but JJ really enjoyed it throughout, so we would absolutely recommend this one as a soothing bedtime book for little ones. Baby Bookworm approved!
