Part of Spiro and Chan’s Baby Loves Science series, this short yet wonderfully educational board book begins with a baby building a tower of blocks. The books informs us that nature likes to build things as well, and where the Baby uses blocks to build, nature uses quarks – subatomic particles that create the building blocks of all matter on Earth. With brightly-colored illustrations, it walks Baby through the different particles of matter, from quarks to protons and neutrons to molecules to atoms. Scientists like to smash atoms together to learn more about them, and Baby thinks this is a great idea – block towers are fun to smash, too!
We bought this book a while back on a whim, and I’m so glad we did! This is a fun, clever, and very age-appropriate way to introduce little ones to scientific concepts. Vivid and joyful art pairs perfectly with simple, straightforward text to introduce each particle in a way that even the littlest bookworm can grasp (indeed, when I pointed out the quarks to JJ today, she was able to continue to identify them whenever they appeared in the book). The length is such that even tiny babies can easily sit through a reading, and JJ and I enjoy this one every time. The whole series is fantastic, and you should absolutely check it out. A great way to introduce little ones early to STEM concepts, and it’s Baby Bookworm approved!
